We’ve rounded up the best new tracks released last month!

From pop to rock to indie, here at NEN we’ve rounded up the best new music out in January 2019: all compiled into a playlist for your listening pleasure. Featuring Pup, Toro y Moi, whenyoung, Daisy the Great, Freedom Fry and more, here’s our top tracks from the first month of 2019. Enjoy!

Check out our January 2019 playlist and find out more about why they’re our picks below:

whenyoung – ‘Never Let Go’

Limerick-born three piece when young bring their dream-pop-rock musings with full force into 2019 with ‘Never Let Go’. Full of jangly guitar melodies, intricate bass lines, meaningful lyrics, and Aoife Power’s profound vocals; this track is one hell of a banger.

Lucy Rose – ‘Conversation’

Lucy Rose is a consistently amazing songwriter.  This is the first taste of her new album out in March and we can’t wait to hear more.

Keuning – ‘Boat Accident’

With his debut album just released, Dave Keuning takes frontman duties and the elements of The Killers’ best 80s inspired synth-pop into his solo work with this lead single. ‘Boat Accident’ is less heavy on guitar riffs that you would usually associate with Keuning, with more focus on electronic sounds, all played by Dave himself, and a knack for songwriting that steps out of a Brandon shaped shadow.

Pup – ‘Kids’

Canadian pop-punk troupe are bringing a resplendent bout of jams our way in 2019, and have teased the release of their new record ‘ …’ later this year. Before we reach that point though, the band have given us single ‘Kids’, a gloriously infectious, fast paced banger that will be stuck in your head for days.

Toro y Moi – ‘Laws of the Universe’

‘Laws of the Universe’ is the groovy new number from Toro Y Moi. Filled with 80s inspired synths and his signature soft vocals, Toro’s made a jam that’ll be enchanting crowds come festival season.

Jared & The Mill – ‘Dying Fear’

Dusting their boots off for their newest release ‘This Story is No Longer Available’, Jared & The Mill continue to bring their unique folk-infused- desert-rock and you can’t help but love every song.

James Blake – Tell Them

Forever pushing boundaries and challenging conventions, Blake’s latest record is true to his mantra. Teaming up with US producer Metro Boomin, trap snares meet eerie chords for a brilliantly unique collaboration.

Weezer – ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’

With their long-awaited ‘Black Album’ finally landing on 1 March 2019, the legendary alt-rockers have filled the eternal wait with a covers album to surprise everyone since their well-received version of ‘Africa’ surfaced. With frontman Rivers’ vocal harmonies making this track as much his as Annie Lennox did the original, ‘Sweet Dreams’ is one of the standouts amongst an album of high quality, respectful covers; making it their own with a superb bridge that compliments the iconic synth riff perfectly.

Daisy The Great – ‘Dips’

Brooklyn-based art pop/indie rock outfit, Daisy the Great, have only just entered our radar with their recent must video for ‘Dips’. Bringing soft, mellow vocals merged with melancholic drum beats, beautiful harmonies, and hypnotising melodies, this song is a hidden gem.

Chapter and Verse – ‘Eleven Hours In Real Time’

Cathartic, dark and brooding. Chapter and Verse’s new EP ‘Glow’ sees the band pushing their sound across their own boundaries and beyond. Steeped in poetic lyricism and gorgeous vocal melodies, Chapter and Verse will quickly be rising the ranks and on everyone’s radar by the end of 2019.

Freedom Fry – ‘The Seasons’

No doubt named after the Slaughter Beach, Dog track of the same name, Freedom Fry come at ‘The Seasons’ with a punchy bassline groove and all the nostalgia of a 00s indie disco. The simple groove, the soaring chorus – it’s all to play for.
